Judy Gilbert Tyson
07/14/1938 - 10/28/2025
Judith "Judy" Gilbert Tyson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, went home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, the 28th of October 2025, at 87 years of age.
Born in Houston on the 14th of July 1938, to her devoted parents, Helen Herod Gilbert and Charlie Francis Gilbert, Judy was a proud native Houstonian. She attended River Oaks Elementary, Lanier Junior High, and graduated from Lamar High School in the Class of 1956. She went on to earn her bachelor's degree in education from Texas Christian University in 1960.
In 1957, Judy met the love of her life, H. Michael "Mike" Tyson, and the two were married on 24 June 1960. Their sixty five years of marriage stand as a beautiful testament to enduring love, faith, and commitment. Together they raised two children, H. Michael "Mike" Tyson, II and Michelle Lee Tyson, and built a life centered on faith, family, and service.
Judy was a lifelong member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, remaining active well beyond her college years. She was also a devoted member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, where she found joy in serving on the Wedding Guild and teaching Children's Sunday school.
Beyond her family, Judy's great passion was her work with The Blue Bird Circle, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children with neurological disorders through clinics and research at Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine. Over the years, she held numerous leadership positions within the Circle, ultimately serving as President from 1987 to 1988. For decades, every Thursday, you could find Judy at the Blue Bird Circle Resale Shop-faithfully present, graciously serving customers, and encouraging her fellow Circle members with her kindness and smile.
Judy is survived by her beloved husband, H. Michael "Mike" Tyson; her son, H. Michael Tyson II, and his wife Michele; her daughter, Michelle Lee Tyson; and her treasured grandchildren, Graham Tyson (Kimberly), Claire DeShazo (Will), Lindsey Oliver (Seth), Gracie Pruitt (Ben), and Madelyn Key (Kyle). She was also the proud great-grandmother of Mackenzie Tyson, Hallie DeShazo, George DeShazo, Nolan Oliver, and Wesley Tyson.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from half past five o'clock in the afternoon until half past seven o'clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 4th of November, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A funeral service is to be conducted at twelve o'clock noon on Wednesday, the 5th of November, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston, where Dr. Tom Pace, Senior Pastor, is to officiate. The family will gather for a private interment later that day.
