On Monday, October 27, 2025, Sue Germany Brown, devoted wife, mother of two, grandmother of three, great-grandmother of one, and unwavering pillar of her family and community, passed away peacefully at the age of 87. A memorial reception will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 1:00-3:00 pm, at Hillier Funeral Home in College Station, TX. All are welcome to gather and celebrate her extraordinary life.

 

Sue was born on August 26, 1938, in Tyler, Texas, to Eunie John and Sterling Germany. She grew up in West University in Houston, in a close-knit family, where she learned the art of hospitality and quiet resilience that defined her. Sue graduated from Lamar High School in Houston in 1956 and attended Southern Methodist University, where she was a proud member of Delta Zeta sorority. Sue met the love of her life, Olin Wheeler Brown, on a blind date in College Station, arranged by a mutual friend. What began as a serendipitous evening blossomed into a lifetime of partnership. On April 14, 1962, they married in Houston. Together for 57 cherished years until his passing in 2019, Sue and Olin raised two children, Scott and Sara Lynn, building a home filled with laughter, unwavering support, and traditions that spanned generations. Sue was immensely proud of her descendants, lighting up at every chance to talk about her paramedic son, Scott Brown, whose quick thinking saved lives; her teacher daughter, Sara Lynn Willis, who shaped young minds with the same warmth she gave her own; her three loving grandkids, who called her “Grandmom”, Reagan Brown and her husband Nathan, Lauren Cappel and her husband Lane, and Brent Willis; and especially her first great-grandson, Cole Cappel, whom she was over the moon for from the very first coo.

 

When her children, Scott and Sara Lynn, went to college, Sue began her second career as a receptionist at Lakewood Animal Clinic, where her love for pets grew even stronger. This led to an assortment of wayward pups and kitties finding their way to live with Sue and Olin in their later years. Her kindness and sharp insight touched countless lives, both two-legged and four, making her a cherished fixture at the clinic and in the hearts of every creature she encountered.

 

Above all, Sue was a mom through and through, the one who never missed a baseball game or dance recital, her applause the loudest in the crowd. She poured creativity into her family, sewing countless dresses and doll clothes by hand, tiny masterpieces that sparked joy and imagination. Her giving spirit extended far beyond home: Sue volunteered tirelessly with the PTA and West End Little League, helping shape young lives with her warmth and organization. In her free time, she found delight in the rhythm of bridge games and bowling alleys, where her competitive spark and easy laughter forged lifelong friendships. She was a devoted partner in Olin's hands-on adventures, often the steady hand behind his kite-building and Scouting

 

escapades, and together they instilled values of kindness and curiosity in dozens of young scouts as den leaders. In later years, Sue and Olin poured their energy into reunion work with the Aggie Class of '60, proudly supporting the Class of ’60 Aggie Rings initiative, dedicated fundraising and camaraderie that kept their maroon spirit alive. After Olin's passing, her compassion deepened further when she adopted her precious poodle, Hattie Belle, from the Aggieland Humane Society, a feisty, loving companion who brought fresh joy and wagging-tailed adventures to her days. Their time at Covenant Presbyterian Church anchored her circle of dear friends, sharing fellowship, Bible studies, and the quiet comfort of lifelong bonds. Her quiet strength, warm smile, and ability to offer just the right word of encouragement made her a confidante to all who knew her. She embodied grace, with a subtle wit that could light up a room and a compassion that lingered long after.

 

Sue was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Olin Wheeler Brown; her parents, Eunie John and Sterling Germany; her brother, Robert Germany; and her daughter-in-law, Tracy Brown.

 

She is survived by her son, Scott Brown; her daughter and son-in-law, Sara Lynn and Matt Willis; her granddaughter and her husband, Reagan Brown and Nathan; her granddaughter and her husband, Lauren Cappel and Lane; her grandson, Brent Willis; and her great-grandson, Cole Cappel.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Aggieland Humane Society, from where Sue's precious poodle, Hattie Belle, found her forever home.

Merry "Dory" Davis, age 87, of Houston, Texas passed into eternal life in Christ on September 10, 2025, surrounded by her loving children. She was born on March 3, 1938, in Houston, Texas to the late Bill & Mitzie Philibert.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Patton Davis, Father Bill J Philibert, Mother Ana "Mitzie" Philibert.

She is survived by her three children, Danielle (Randy) Burch, Denise (Ray) Poole, Richard Davis; grandchildren Chelsea (Jerry) Coon; great grandchildren, Jordy and Cooper Coon. She is also survived by her brother Billy (Janie) Philibert and her sister Juli (Doug) Stockdale; Nephew Bill James (Dana) Philibert; Niece Tiffany Philibert, 4 great nieces, 2 great nephews, and many first, second, and third cousins.

Her childhood home was in Bellaire, Texas. She graduated from Lamar High School in 1956 and attended Sam Houston State University for three years until she met Bob Davis, fell in love and got married. She was a wife of a Marine Pilot and showed her resilience, while raising 3 small children under the age of 4, during his deployment to Vietnam (in the day of cloth diapers).

She worked as the church secretary, for 21 years, at St. Alberts Catholic Church, where she touched many lives with her kindness and love.

She was actively involved in the Houston Rodeo, as a committeeman on Rodeo Express and was a team member of the Coyote's Bar-b-que Cook-off Team. She was active with the St. Alberts Rosary Makers, Sam Houston State University Philo sorority and active member of the Norwegian Elkhound Dog Club of Greater Houston. She took great pleasure in gardening and reading.

Family was everything to Dory! Family gatherings were the most loved and special events to her, and she held them dear to her heart. She had so much faith and love for her Lord & Savior and the blessed Mother. She was an angel to our family and so many people in her life, that most of her gifts were figures of angles, found placed around her home.

A visitation for Dory will be held Thursday, September 18, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023. A funeral service will continue from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. A committal service will occur Thursday, September 18, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.

Jerry Lee Hannon 1937-2024

Jerry Lee Hannon, age 86, of Tyler, Texas passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2024. He is under the care of Lloyd James Funeral Home and his final resting place will be in Houston at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.

 

Joanie McConnell Black 1938 - 2025

Joan “Joanie” McConnell Black went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, the 19th of September 2025. She was born in Houston, Texas on the 14th of November 1938, to Derwood John McConnell and Mary Eleanor Rain McConnell, who preceded her in death.

Joanie attended St. Vincent de Paul School and St. Agnes Academy, and she graduated from Lamar High School in Houston, Texas in 1956. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Houston, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha and served as vice-president of her sorority. Joanie was also a University of Houston Cougar cheerleader, and the family still has her megaphone! Joanie met the love of her life, David Barrow Black, Sr. at UofH, and they were married for 53 years.

Joanie served her community well as a member of the Junior League of Houston, becoming a sustaining member. She loved serving in the Junior League Tea Room and doing puppetry in local schools with her Junior League placement. After her children were grown, she worked with David at their furniture stores, Black’s Carriage House-Ethan Allen. She also was an active member of the Houston Christian University Guild and served as a team captain for the prayer ministry.

Joanie with her husband, David, were very active in the Harris County Republican Party and served in many different capacities including attending many State and District Republican Conventions, where Joanie was a precinct chairman. Joanie loved her country and was a true patriot. In praying for our country, she often prayed 2 Chronicles 7:14.

She was a member of Second Baptist Church Houston and belonged to the Special Forces Bible study class and served in the prayer ministry for many years. Joanie also contributed to many ministries to further the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Joanie is survived by her son, David Barrow Black, Jr. of Dallas; daughter, Mary Katherine Black Pattison and her husband, Patrick, and grandchildren whom she absolutely adored, Andrew Duke Pattison and Anne Campbell Pattison, all of Dallas. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, and their families: George Black III, Katherine Walters, Emmalee Black, Amy Dexter, Elizabeth Wills, Mary Ruth Meek, and Wilson Moore, along with many precious cousins from the Rain, Black, and Murray families. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Lynda McConnell Moore and Karen Stephanie McConnell.

Friends are cordially invited to a celebration of Joanie’s life at one o’clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 1st of October, in the Hankamer Chapel of Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in Parlor B.

Samuel Tevis Grinstead passed away on Saturday, the 9th of August. He was 86 years old.

 

Tevis was born in Houston on September 23, 1938, the son of William Carter Grinstead, Sr and Lee Menefee Tevis.

Tevis graduated from the University of Texas in Plan II in 1960 and from the University of Texas Law School in 1963. He clerked for a federal circuit judge for one year then went to work in Houston for Vinson & Elkins. He became a partner at V&E and practiced corporate finance and merger and acquisition law for 30 years.

 

After retiring Tevis and his wife Marilee began spending more time in their home in Wimberley and Tevis became involved in Wimberley politics. He worked for the incorporation of Wimberley and served on various boards and commissions including being chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission. He also became a member of the Board of Directors of The Friends of Blue Hole and worked on a committee to draft the park master plan.

 

Tevis was preceded in death by his wife Marilee Wood and stepson Geoffrey Wood. Tevis is survived by his daughter Michele Griffiths and her husband Richard Griffiths, son, William Grinstead, stepson, Stephen Wood and his wife Ximena Wood, and grandchildren, Auden Griffiths, Lulu Griffiths and Isabel Wood.

Stuart Schafer 1937-2025

Stuart Joseph Schafer, age 87, passed away on April 4th, 2025, surrounded by family. Born in 1937 during a brief stay in Dallas, Stuart grew up in Houston. He attended Lamar High School, then UT Austin and Stephen F. Austin. Returning to Houston he married, began his career, and started a family. After nearly a decade in California, he and the family returned to Texas, settling in what is now Oak Leaf.

Stuart began his career in the oil tools industry, becoming an early expert in computerized manufacturing. He pioneered data centers and automated processes at Grove Valve in Oakland, California and Larkin in Waxahachie, Texas which he later led. In the 1980s he returned to the family Geophysics firm, Sidney Schafer and Associates, later becoming President. As a teen, he helped his father take gravity readings in the Gulf of Mexico-data so precise it remained valuable for over half a century.

Stuart shared a joyful and devoted 62-year marriage with Diane. They were best friends, partners, and an inspiration to their children and grandchildren. He is survived by Diane and their children: Doug Schafer (Wanda) of Laguna Niguel, CA; David Schafer (Stacy) of Torrance, CA; and Karen Scott (Michael) of Oak Leaf, TX. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Christopher (Cheyenne, WY), Suzi (Provo, UT), Joseph (Lehi, UT), Jonathan and Ian (Oak Leaf, TX), and Olivia and Hannah Rose (Torrance, CA).

Stuart was a 40+ year member of Midlothian Bible Church where he found great fellowship. He served his community in many roles, including Scoutmaster of Troop 652 and as a member and officer of his local fire board. Early in his career he served in the Air Force Reserve.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Wuanita, and his brothers, Stephen and Mark. Stuart's life was a gift to his family, community, and everyone who had the privilege to know him. He will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held at 2 P.M. on Saturday, April 26 at Midlothian Bible Church, 4250 FM 663. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the charity of your choice.

BEBE GIPS WALKER 1937 - 2025

Altaleen Gips Walker, affectionately known as “Bebe” to family and friends and “Bunkie” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was born in Houston, Texas on October 8, 1937 to Alton and Sybil Gips. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, on April 21, 2025. 

Bebe proudly spent the first 42 years of her life in Houston, graduating from Lamar High School in 1956.  She often shared fond memories of growing up in Bellaire and of dear friends that she kept from kindergarten all the way through graduation and beyond.  She cherished those lifelong friendships and attended many reunions, as recently as April 20, 2024.

Her childhood summers were spent in Yorktown, Texas with her beloved German grandparents.  It was there that her grandfather, a masterful bridge player, taught her the game that would become one of her lifelong passions. Bebe continued to play bridge several times a week throughout her life, as well as participating in “bridge retreats” where she would spend the whole weekend playing with friends.   She had a fierce love of games and a legendary competitive streak. Whether it was bowling (she proudly earned multiple trophies and 300-point pins for perfect games), or family favorites like “Hot Dice” and “Dum Dum,” Bebe played to win—and she usually did. 

In her early years, while raising her young children, Bebe worked at Pace Management, where she created advertising campaigns and helped produce shows, races, and concerts. She was instrumental in organizing major events at the Astrodome and the Summit—even contributing to the grand opening of the Superdome in New Orleans.

Later, Bebe began a successful career in real estate, where she met the love of her life, Johnny Walker. Together, they built a life and a business partnership that lasted over 50 years. Their first venture—AWC Video Corp, which reflected their sense of humor and stood for “Are We Crazy?”—evolved into Texas Televideo and Video Specialists. The business grew to include more than 40 locations across Texas and Arkansas.  Johnny and Bebe eventually returned to Livingston 30 years ago. 

 

Bebe lived life to the fullest and had a magnetic presence that lit up every room she entered. She was a natural storyteller, known for her wit, her spunk, and her unmistakable style. Though petite in stature, she was a firecracker with a big personality who made a lasting impression. She had a gift for bringing people together—whether it was her cherished “Sister Fest” or “Birthday Fest,” the Community Concert series that she helped organize, or spontaneous family gatherings. Her home was always warm and welcoming, from festive Christmases to lazy summer afternoons by the pool filled with an endless supply of waffle mix and grilled cheese sandwiches. And she did it all with perfect hair, polished nails, and color-coordinated outfits—from her jewelry to her shoes. Inspired by her grandmother, Bebe also found joy in her “silly flowers,” and her home and yard were always bursting with color and blooms.

Bebe was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Johnny, and her stepdaughter Jennifer McCage. She leaves behind her children: daughters Leigh Ann McCoy and Cathy Gips, both of Austin, Texas; sons Dan David Cryan, Jr. (Rhena) and Kenneth G. Cryan (Trudy), both of Sealy, Texas; and her sisters Judy Hodge (Marshall) and Jeri Winslett (Walter). Her legacy lives on through her 11 grandchildren—Christine Madison, Lauren McCoy, Trey Cryan, Patrick Cryan, Brett Cryan, Kayleen Moseley, Kendra Fitzhenry, Preston “Bo” Cryan, AJ McCage, Blair McCage, and Joseph McCage—12 great-grandchildren, and many lifelong close friends.

A celebration of Bebe’s remarkable life will be held at the First Methodist Church of Livingston on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 1:00pm.
