HUGH M. HERNDON 1938-2023

Hugh Herndon

1938-2023

Hugh Milner Herndon, born on September 18th, 1938, died peacefully on November 30th, 2023, with his loving wife of 62 years, Betty Read Herndon, by his side. He dedicated his life to sharing the Good News of the Gospel and now has eternal life in Jesus Christ. He believed firmly in the words of Romans 10:10 which proclaims, "For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved." He lived his life for Christ and shared the love of Jesus with everyone he encountered, even if only for a few seconds in passing. If you ever asked Hugh how he was doing, his response was always, "I am blessed and highly favored!" And he wanted the same for everyone he met. He waited his whole life for this glorious moment when he would finally be in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We are so happy for him. There is no doubt he is now hearing the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Lucy Zarr Foyt

Lucy Zarr Foyt

September 24, 1938 – April 5, 2023

Lucy Foyt, wife of A.J. Foyt, passed away in a Houston hospital after a brief illness. She was 84.

Lucy had a special appreciation for life, always embracing new experiences, people, and challenges. There was never a dull moment being married to the auto racing legend; for nearly 68 years, Lucy was his rock, keeping him grounded as he ascended to superstardom in motorsports. Her steadfast support and amazing grace under pressure throughout A.J.’s career and post-career, which was marked by life-threatening injuries on several occasions, made it possible for him to stage the remarkable comebacks that added to his legendary status.

Houston was always home to Lucy, having been born in 1938 to beloved parents, Dr. L. Lynn Zarr and Elizabeth Zarr, and raised in River Oaks, a prominent enclave of the nation’s fourth largest city. During her time at Lamar High School, Lucy met Foyt and the two married in 1955, further laying their roots in the Houston community. Together, they raised three children, A.J. Foyt III, Terry and Jerry. Later on, they adopted their grandson Larry who is president of A.J. Foyt Enterprises, the Indy car racing team Foyt started in late 1965.

Always seen as beautiful and gracious, Lucy bonded three generations of the Foyt family, having four children, eight grandchildren, and twenty-one great grandchildren who adored her. She was able to watch them grow to achieve success, marry for love, and raise children, many of which are named after her with the most recent being Larry’s daughter Lucy who was born in January.

With a passion for culture, arts, and global travel, Lucy shared a broadened perspective and open mind about the world that motivated and inspired adventure to those around her. That legacy will live on through her family and influence more generations of Foyt's to come.

With careful thought and consideration and in accordance to her wishes, funeral services will be private.

Please visit Mrs. Foyt’s online memorial tribute at GeoHLewis.com, where fond memories and words of comfort and condolence may be shared electronically with her family.

Sandy Griffies Poole 1938-2023

Sandy Griffies Poole 1938-2023

Sandra Lou Griffies Poole (Sandy) passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at the age of 84 with her son, Lance by her side. She is survived by her sons Randall Troy Poole (Randy) and his wife Kathleen (Kathy); Ronald Lance Poole (Lance) and his wife Mary. Sandy also leaves behind 4 grandchildren - Lauren, Matthew, Chase and Allyson (Ally) – who were her pride and joy.

Sandy was born on December 30, 1938, at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas and was the daughter of the late Frank and Louise Griffies. Her younger brother, the late Donald Griffies followed a couple of years later. The family relocated to Teaneck, New Jersey for several years as a career move for her father. They moved to Houston, Texas in the early 1950’s where she resided for the rest of her life. She graduated from Lamar High School and then attended Sam Houston State University where she fell in love with and later married her late husband- Fred Malcolm Poole.

Sandy and Fred were an extremely social couple and had an expansive and diverse group of friends. Sandy was always interested in volunteerism. She began volunteering in the petting zoo at the Houston Zoo several years before finding her life’s passion at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in the early 1970’s. Soon afterwards, she joined the School Art Committee, which she remained affiliated with for over 40 years. She also served as a member of Ticket Trailer. She enjoyed judging contestants BBQ at the HLSR World Championship Bar-B-Que and being a member of Shooters Club.

Sandy brought a great deal of value to the Show’s educational programs through her tireless enthusiasm and leadership. She served as the Chairman of the School Art Committee in the 1980’s where she first introduced a proposal to have a school art auction to raise money for scholarships for the participating children. It was initially turned down, but eventually became an overwhelmingly popular and successful part of the scholarship program which is the basis for the Show. She also played a pivotal role in the development of the Cowboy Artists of America Scholarships to the Western Art Academy workshop at Schreiner College in Kerrville, TX. Sandy broke down barriers in a Good Ole Boy’s world when she became one of the first ladies to be elected to the HLSR Board of Directors in 1985.

Sandy also served as a member of the Houston Junior Woman’s Club where she volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House. She was a lifetime member of the Farm and Ranch Club and served on the Scholarship Luncheon Committee where she helped formulate the Future Artists of America Program at the Harris County Fair. Lastly, Sandy was a member of The Ladies of Fleetwood. To date it remains a mystery how The Ladies of Fleetwood were able to exchange information regarding the whereabouts and wrongdoings of their children sometimes even before it happened.

Sandy had a bright smile that always lit up any room she entered. Her charismatic, fun loving and thoughtful personality always drew people in. She will be sorely missed, but forever stay in our hearts.

A private burial service will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2023. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Sandy Poole (School Art) HLSR Educational Fund, 3 NRG Park, Houston, TX 77054. PATRICIA (PAT) BURKHART ODEN  1938-2023

After a lifetime filled with love and laughter, Pat Oden, 84, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, January 22nd. At her side were her beloved husband of 63 years, Jerry, and their children, Murray, Leigh Anne, and Marian.

Patricia Burkhart was born on March 13th, 1938 in Houston, Texas. Her mother preceded her in death when Pat was only five years old, so she spent a large portion of her childhood with family in nearby Georgetown. When her father remarried, Pat moved back to Houston with Carl and her new step-mother Rosalie.

She graduated from Lamar High School in Houston and the University of Texas in Austin. At both schools, Pat developed many lifelong friendships, including with a number of her sisters in UT’s Tri Delta sorority. Recently, Pat compared stories of her sorority shenanigans with those of her granddaughter Lucy, who is currently living in a sorority. Pat won. (Winning story: the time a nearby fraternity poured either lighter fluid or gasoline – she couldn’t remember and it doesn’t matter – into the rain gutters of the Tri Delta house and lit them on fire.)

Anyway, Pat and Jerry met on a blind date in 1955, when she was a senior in high school and he was a freshman at Texas A&M. They went to a Rice vs. Texas A&M football game, and school tradition calls for Aggies and their dates to kiss whenever A&M scores. But at this particular game, on this particular blind date, when A&M scored, Jerry didn’t. Pat refused to kiss him. Jerry thought “well, she’s a keeper.” Pat eventually came to the same conclusion, and they married in 1960.

While raising 3 children, Pat also embarked on a long career in education. Driven by boundless curiosity, she was a life-long learner who cherished sharing what she learned with students of all ages. She taught at several noted early education schools in Houston, and after receiving her master’s degree in geography from Texas A&M, retired as an Adjunct Professor of Geography at York College in Pennsylvania.

Over the years, Pat and Jerry weren’t afraid to make big moves together. Chronologically, they created comfortable and loving homes in: Houston TX, Aberdeen MD, Houston TX, Whittier CA, Houston TX, Fort Worth TX, York PA, and Sequim WA.

Their shared natural curiosity and eclectic interests led Pat and Jerry down some unexpected paths. For example, in Ft. Worth TX, they took their love of sailing to the next level by becoming the owners of a sailboat dealership. While they had countless adventures on the water, Pat might be best known as someone who accidentally left her car in gear where she shouldn’t have, enabling a Ford Mustang to roll down a boat ramp and sink into the murky depths of Eagle Mountain Lake.

After years of an East coast adventure in York, PA, they retired in 2004, and moved west to Washington, to be near their kids and grandchildren. Settling in Sequim, Pat and Jerry developed a large community of dear friends centered around St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and the Sequim Bay Yacht Club. (They were allowed to join the Yacht Club presumably because the members had not yet heard about Pat’s notorious boat ramp skills.)

Pat had a deep love for every church she attended in her life, and St. Luke’s was no exception. She was deeply involved in numerous facets of church life, because, sometimes to Jerry’s concern, she always said “yes” – she volunteered for anything and everything. Whether she was delivering Meals on Wheels, working on the Altar Guild, serving on the Vestry, or cooking for “Soup’s On,” Pat lived to help.

In addition to sailing, Pat’s outdoor passions included golf, fly fishing, and rock collecting.

She loved rocks, some might say too much, and returned from every excursion with a rock or two in a pocket. In fact, she was once stopped by airport security and denied boarding an international flight because her carry-on luggage contained too many rocks. (If you need a nice rock, ask Jerry.)

Pat loved to travel, and especially with her daughters. Their last trip took them to Holland, Switzerland, and France. While they were soaking in every sight that Pat’s leisurely pace would allow, they were also giggling and laughing until they cried.

Pat was an avid reader, and loved doing puzzles and playing games. Her competitive nature meant that she wouldn’t hesitate to defeat her very young grandchildren at board games – done with absolute love, of course. “It makes them tougher,” she’d laugh.

Pat’s lifelong infatuation with art flourished after she retired from teaching. She embraced her love of color and geometry, and to the endless pride of her family, became an award-winning fiber artist. Her art has been shown in numerous galleries and venues around the Olympic Peninsula, and one of her works was accepted for the prestigious Quilt National 2011, an international-juried exhibition of the country’s best contemporary quilts. A piece titled “9 Patch / 26 Triangles” appeared in the show that traveled to art museums around the country. Pat’s amazing pieces inspired many others to take up the art, and her impact will be treasured forever by those lucky enough to experience it. One of her quilts can be seen in the sanctuary of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and a small sampling of her body of work can be seen at PatriciaOden.com.

Pat is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 63 years, Jerry; brother Guy Burkhart and his wife Robyn; son Murray and his wife Mary; grandchildren Wyatt and Lucy; daughter Leigh Anne and her partner Scott Davis; and daughter Marian and her husband Lance Jenn.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association, or St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Sequim, Washington.

Pat’s funeral service will be held at 11:00 am at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, March 11th.
