July 10, 1937 – February 14, 2021

Marion Collins Jenkins left this world for his Heavenly home on February 14, 2021, at the age of 83. He was born in Galveston, Texas on July 10, 1937 to William Jennings and Clair Jenkins.

Marion was a resident of Galveston until the age 12, along with his siblings Clair, Sunny, Jimmy and Lois. He called both Texas and California home until finally settling in Grapevine, Texas, where he resided at the time of his passing.

He was a USAF Veteran, serving during the Korean (sic) War. Following his service to his Country, Marion was employed by Seagrams as well as owning several businesses throughout the years. Not only was he a member of the Lions Club, but he also spent his free time as a volunteer with several Law Enforcement Agencies.

Along with loving and caring for his wife, Deanna, Marion was an avid gardener, a sports fan (especially his hometown Dallas teams, the Ranger and Cowboys). Marion and his wife had a great love for animals. There were many animals throughout the years that found comfort, love, food and warmth in their home, whether it was neighborhood pets, strays looking for a friend or the lucky ones who became part of the family. Marion was the kind of man who never met a stranger. Using his gift of gab, charm and charisma, Marion had a way of putting people at ease and drawing them in. This allowed him to touch the hearts and lives of many he met along life’s journey. His loving personality brought excitement to his grandchildren and niece and nephew, who looked forward to his many stories and jokes during visits.

John A. Hoagland 1936-2012

John A. Hoagland

June 15, 1936-

June 16,2012

NEWPORT NEWS - John A. Hoaglund died peacefully with his family by his side on June 16, 2012, after a long battle with cancer.

John was born to Rudolph and Doris Hoaglund in Houston, Texas, on June 15, 1936. He spent his childhood in Sacramento, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and Lexington, Ky. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and, after training at Quantico, was stationed in Okinawa and at South Camp, near Mount Fuji. Following the death of his father in 1955 – John's mother had passed away the year before – he returned to the States to care for his younger brother, Bob.

In 1957, John traveled to Europe and studied there on the G.I. Bill, first at the Universities of Munich and Vienna and thereafter at the Free University of Berlin, where he received his Doctorate of Philosophy. After lecturing for five years in English and Philosophy at the Free University, he joined the Philosophy Department of Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va., in 1972.

John taught classes in Ancient and Modern Philosophy, Critical Thinking, Logic, and Aesthetics. He served as chair of the department for nine years, developing and furthering its Critical Thinking Program during his tenure. In addition to authoring a textbook in Critical Thinking and a number of scholarly articles, he attended and read papers at numerous conferences and was considered an internationally recognized expert in the fields of critical thinking, logic, and aesthetics. Some of his research focused on Pre-Socratic Philosophy and Modern Art as well as the world of art forgery.

John loved to teach and instill in his students an interest in philosophy and an appreciation of the arts. He enjoyed serving as a faculty advisor to the Socrates CafE, a student-run philosophy discussion group that was close to his heart as it reminded him of his own student days in Europe. In 2011, John retired as professor emeritus after 39 years of teaching.

During his career he was awarded the Berlin Senate Merit Scholarship, the John F. Kennedy Institute Doctoral Award, the American Council of Learned Societies Travel Grant Competition, the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar in Music Criticism at Berkeley, California, and a Senior Fulbright Reward Fellowship at the University of Bergen, Norway.

John was a member of numerous national and international scholarly associations including the American Philosophical Association, the American Society for Aesthetics, the Association for Informal Logic and Critical Thinking, the British Society of Aesthetics, the International Society for the Study of Argumentation, and the Society for Business Ethics. He served for many years on the Executive Committee and as president of the Association for Informal Logic and Critical Thinking.

John always held a deep appreciation of the Fine and Performing Arts. As an art lover, he believed in the importance of studying the original artwork, which led him to visit museums all over Europe and the U.S. He enjoyed listening to classical music on his favorite local radio station and seldom missed performances by the Virginia Symphony or the Virginia Opera. John loved books; he was a voracious reader of not only literature and scholarly works but also popular fiction and nonfiction. His lifelong interest in languages extended to Ancient Greek, Latin, German, Swedish, French, and Spanish. In his leisure time, he liked playing tennis, gardening, running, and being at the beach with his family. An avid traveler throughout his life, John took many trips to Europe. His favorite destinations were France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden. He also traveled extensively within the U.S. and enjoyed family vacations in the Caribbean.

A wonderful and devoted husband and father, John leaves behind Lilian, his loving wife of 46 years; son, Glen Hoaglund and wife Jessica; daughter, Larissa Hoaglund and husband Thomas; sisters-in-law, Maj-Britt Frangos and Barbara O'Leary; nephew, Per Nilsson with family; and niece, Dawn Hoaglund with family. John is sorely missed by all of us who knew and loved him dearly.

A memorial service with time for sharing will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 210 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA 23601.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to WHRO FM 90.3, at 757-889-9334 or by email to rachel.jordan@whro.org.

Bill Shackjelford 1938-2022

WILLIAM CLINTON SHACKELFORD

April 26, 1938 – April 17, 2022

"Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you"

(Psalm 116:7)

"Shack" or "Big Dad" or "Catfish", was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on April 26, 1938 to Whitcomb Riley Shackelford and Elizabeth Wilbanks Shackelford. He was raised in Houston and met his true love, India, in 1956 as a freshman at Baylor University. Shack was the president of his fraternity at Baylor, Tryon Coterie, and graduated with a BBA degree from the Hankamer School of Business.

After graduating in 1960 the newly married Shackelfords moved to Houston where he joined his father selling spices at the Shackelford Brokerage Company. In 1968, Shack began a lengthy, successful career in investment management when he became a stockbroker and ultimately a branch manager with E.F. Hutton. Shack's love and ability to lead, inspire, and draw out the best in others became evident in his work and in his personal life.

In 1975, Shack was recruited to run the branch office of Loeb Rhodes in San Antonio. The move placed the family closer to the hunting and fishing in south Texas which they all love. Their adventuresome life continued with their two boys, Clint and David, as he led them into exciting times sailing in the Caribbean, hunting in Africa, fishing in Alaska and on the gulf coast. He was later recruited to run the San Antonio branch of Rotan Mosle, and in 1986 he established a branch office for Smith Barney in San Antonio. He ultimately became director for the southwest region at Smith Barney where he was responsible for 15 offices and over 500 stockbrokers in multiple states.

After retiring at an early age (59), he purchased a south Texas property. On that ranch he and India built an incredible wildlife sanctuary. Until it's sale in 2021, Shack ran the ranch with the same precision and enthusiasm he developed as a businessman.

Shack was blessed with a strong faith in God and was an active member of Dilley Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, teacher, finance committee member and a general lovable, giving and entertaining friend of many in that church and community.

As his health declined, Bill continued using his gift of encouraging others wherever he was, whether brilliantly trading stocks in his office, teaching bible studies, telling stories, or confined to a hospital bed. Shack lived life to its full abundance, collecting friends and devotees along the way with his extraordinary wit, unforgettable catchphrases "Shackisms", and brilliance and joyful spirit. The delights of his intellect were many and a gift he shared with all of us.

He is survived by his wife, India, of San Antonio, his son, Clint and wife Buffy of San Antonio, his son, David and wife duVergne of Los Angeles, California, grandsons, Will Shackelford and Henry Shackelford of San Antonio, and many loved sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, cousins, grand nieces, grand nephews, friends, and grand dogs. The family would like to thank his caregivers, Angie Montfort and Bibi Maytorena for their loving faithful care of him as well as Vitas Hospice for their dedication to Shack's comfort as he transitioned to his eternal life. A special thanks to doctors Lopez, DeLee, Weinstein, and McKenzie & team for their loving care.
