Dr. Frank Owen McGehee, III
October 23, 1938 - July 13, 2022
Frank
Owen McGehee, III, M.D., C.C.N, born October 23, 1938 in Birmingham,
Alabama, passed away peacefully July 13, 2022 at home in Huntsville,
Texas after a brief illness.
Frank was the son of Dr. Frank Owen
McGehee, II, and Joyce Lacy McGehee, both deceased. He is survived by
his wife Vivienne McGehee, son Dr. Frank McGehee, IV (Liz McGehee),
daughter Mindy McGehee Riseden (Connor Riseden), and five grandchildren:
Madeline, Frank V, and Davis McGehee, and Reese and Tristan Riseden.
Frank is also survived by his sister Lacy McGehee Gilbert (Michael
Gilbert), niece and nephew Joyce and Owen Gilbert, and also his
grand-nephew, Topi Gore.
As a young child, Frank lived in various
places - from Birmingham, AL, to Buffalo, NY, to Memphis, TN - and
enjoyed adventures with his grandparents in Indiana (even inspecting
oilfields in Wyoming). His family then moved to Houston wherein Frank
attended River Oaks Elementary, Lanier Middle School (he loved being a
Purple Pup Cheerleader), and then Lamar High School from where he
graduated in 1956 (while regularly spending Sundays serving as an
acolyte at Christ Church Cathedral). Frank graduated from the University
of Texas in 1960, and then went on to obtain his medical degree from
Tulane School of Medicine in 1965.
His post-graduate studies,
internships, residency, and fellowships led him to the following places
until he found his way back to Houston in 1972: City of Memphis
Hospitals, University of Pennsylvania, Hermann Hospital in Houston
(Ophthalmology Residency), and fellowships in Ophthalmic Plastic
Surgery, at Manhattan Eye & Ear Infirmary in New York, NY and at Eye
Foundation Hospital Birmingham, AL. He also served as a U.S. Army
Captain Medical Corps in Korea and in San Francisco, CA at Presidio.
After his return to Houston in 1972, Frank practiced as an ophthalmology
specialist/surgeon at his clinic on FM 1960 until 1989; then he moved
to Huntsville, Texas and practiced at the McGehee Eye Center until 2020,
when he retired.
Frank truly enjoyed serving as a doctor helping
people and worked hard to obtain the following board certifications and
honors throughout his career: Board Certified in Ophthalmology, Board
Certification in Clinical Nutrition, President Tri-County Medical
Society, and Texas and National President of the International and
American Association of Clinical Nutritionist (2000- 2004).
Frank was
a faithful servant of Christ at St Stephens Episcopal Church in
Huntsville, Texas. He was also a member of the Brotherhood of St.
Andrew. His happiest times were Saturday morning breakfast meetings of
the Brotherhood and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed
participating in landscaping duties at St. Stephens with Vivienne.
Friends remember the sparkle in his eyes, the constant smile upon his
face, and his contagious joy in making others smile and laugh. For
Frank, the glass was always half-full as he enjoyed his work, treasured
his family and church community, and cherished his faith.
In lieu of
flowers the family requests remembrance be made to St. Stephens
Episcopal Church for additional landscaping of the campus in his memory.
The Celebration Service of Eternal Life in Christ will be held at St.
Stephens Episcopal Church on Friday August 5, 2022 at 12 Noon, 5019 Sam
Houston Ave., Huntsville, Texas 77340. Father Bruce Chabot and Reverend
Jim Morgan will officiate. Luncheon to follow at Elkins Lake Clubhouse.
Memorial condolences to the family may be made at www.shmfh.com.
